In this expert’s opinion, the most misunderstood subject matter regarding a job search or career change is the overall topic of the Hidden or Unpublished Job Market. This so-called market has confused and frustrated professional job seekers since its inception.

When I started in the search business during the late nineteen eighties, I was initially fascinated by the tales of the Unpublished Job Market. Since then, I’ve spent many years attempting to further understand and more importantly, gain access to this mysterious place. Therefore, what or where is the Hidden Job Market? Does it really exist? Can the average Joe jobseeker gain access to this so-claimed wealth of hidden job opportunities?

Although many boutique career management or marketing firms will promise you a special invitation or access to the Hidden Job Market, make no mistake— there is no easy entrance! If you believe that there is actually a Hidden Job Market, and you genuinely believe you’ve got what it takes to make entry to this touted land of job opportunity, then you might be on the right track to a better career position.

I recently reviewed a dozen articles on the Internet regarding The Hidden Job Market. Most of them were incomplete and barely provided an overview of the author’s perception of the definition of an unadvertised job. Others claim that the Internet is the new way to tap in (Don’t Believe It!). If these articles confused me, I can’t imagine what they would do to the traditional professional job seeker.
