Marketing the Multi-Million Dollar Executive
By John  Seraichyk

Most of us don’t give it much thought, but when we set out on a self-directed job search or career change, we are marketing a multi-million dollar product. For example, if you are earning $75,000 to $500,000 annually, over 20-30 years of work, your lifetime earning potential could modestly calculate to be millions of dollars! Therefore, when you set out on your job search you are, as a matter of fact, selling a multi-million dollar product.

When we look at the way most professionals and executives market themselves/job search, we find it hard to believe that one would sell a multi-million dollar product with a “homemade résumé” and the Internet as their primary sales and marketing tools.

Unfortunately, as a job-seeker you are restricted by many hiring protocols implemented by companies in an underlying  effort to keep you out. That’s right many companies will do all they can to keep you from reaching decision makers on the inside. Rather, they want you to go to their web site, fill out an application and forward your “homemade” résumé along with the masses and just sit back and wait. Have you seen the help wanted ads that read: No Phone Calls Please?

Waiting to hear back from a company regarding your résumé submission puts you in a reactive rather than a proactive mode. If you are unemployed with an earning potential of $100,000, you are losing approximately $2000  for every week you are out of work! Therefore, while you continue your search in a reactive mode, you are losing a great deal of money. What’s worse, as the date gap in your unemployment grows, companies will begin to question why you have been unemployed for so long. If you are employed, you are probably too busy to conduct even a traditional reactive job search. You might start out by sending a few résumés via the Internet, but most don’t have much success and just stay in their jobs hoping that something better will come along. This can go on for years!

Can you imagine a corporation trying to market a multi-million dollar product with one or two pages of information (a résumé) about what they are selling and then being restricted from calling decision makers on the inside? No company could  stay in business marketing a product the way people search for a job. Most traditional job seekers have been brainwashed to believe that they must follow strict hiring protocols, or they will be eliminated from consideration. You will never maximize your earnings or find the right company or the absolute best career situation if you continue to market yourself using traditional job-hunting strategies.
